Colin Newman (Wire) bewertet aktuelle Alben

Mit PJ Harvey & John Parish, Pet Shop Boys, Pete Doherty, Bonnie "Prince" Billy u.a.

Jede Woche präsentieren wir in Kooperation mit Intro die Rubrik "Platten vor Gericht." Diesmal mit dem Urteil von Art- und Punk-Rock Urgestein Colin Newman von der legendären Band Wire.

  • Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Beware

    Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Beware

Atmosphere of some tracks quite like Pentangle! A good thing IMO but the country tracks turn me off big time. 7/10

  • Pet Shop Boys - Yes

    Pet Shop Boys - Yes

What can you say about the Pet Shop Boys? I have a soft spot for them. I love their pretension & the way they take pop music so seriously, plus "Being Boring" is sublime. Also they got Lobe from my own label to do a remix 'cos Neil is a fan. Of course it's cheesy but so what! 8/10

  • Pete Doherty - Grace/Wastelands

    Pete Doherty - Grace/Wastelands

Smackhead poetry is not my thing but this is better than the weak as pisswater bands he's had. But to be honest I don't really care that much... 6/10

  • Scott Matthew - There Is An Ocean

Scott Matthew - There Is An Ocean

There's a lot of stuff like this around, you can't say it's bad, but I wouldn't listen to it a lot. 7/10

PJ Harvey & John Parish - A Woman A Man Walked By

I don't know her stuff that well but I guess this is the more experimental side of her oeuvre. Good to know she's experimenting but not sure I like that much of it. 5/10

  • Muff Potter - Gute Aussicht

    Muff Potter - Gute Aussicht

Kind of pop punk, but non-obvious chord changes give it an interesting atmosphere. So it's not "punk lite". Reminds me a little of Pinback, which is definitely not a bad thing. 7/10

  • The Juan MacLean - The Future Will Come

The Juan MacLean - The Future Will Come

I kind of like it but I'm not sure anyone would be paying that much attention if it wasn't on DFA. Must be weird for Germans to hear stuff like this touted as "new". 7/10

  • Art Brut - Art Brut vs. Satan

Art Brut - Art Brut vs. Satan

Even though they are way too cool for school and wouldn't give Wire the time of day, their record isn't bad, if a bit samey. I've got the first single of course and have played it out. Not sure I see the point of naming your songs after other people's. 7/10

  • Prefuse 73 - Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian

Prefuse 73 - Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian

Certainly the most interesting so far. It's Like Todd Rundgren's "A Wizard, A True Star" meets game boy circuit bending. Kind of fucked up. Seemingly they are good live. 8/10
