Kurz nach dem Mauerfall vor 30 Jahren brachte Roger Waters seine eigene „Wall“ nach Deutschland. Am 21. Juli 1990 führte der Komponist und Pink-Floyd-Bandleader das legendäre Doppelalbum „The Wall“ aus dem Jahr 1979 am Brandenburger Tor in voller Länge auf – ein Stück Konzertgeschichte mit zahlreichen Gaststars wie Bon Jovi, Scorpions, Bryan Adams, Sinéad O’Connor, Cyndi Lauper, Garth Hudson, Thomas Dolby, Joni Mitchell, Marianne Faithfull, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson und Van Morrison.
Dieses besondere Konzert mit Showeinlagen von Schauspielern wie Tim Curry war von Waters und Produzent Tony Hollingsworth zur Feier des Mauerfalls und seiner weltweiten Bedeutung geplant worden. Es fand auf unbebautem Gelände zwischen Potsdamer Platz und Brandenburger Tor statt, das Teil des ehemaligen Todesstreifens zwischen Ost- und Westberlin war. Auf der größten jemals errichteten Bühne stand eine 168 Meter lange und 25 Meter hohe Mauer. Der Großteil dieser Mauer war vor der Show errichtet worden, der Rest wurde im ersten Teil des Konzerts gebaut, um dann im Finale effektvoll abgerissen zu werden.
Während des Kalten Krieges war „The Wall“ – ursprünglich als Rockoper zum Thema Entfremdung konzipiert – zum Soundtrack der Eiszeit zwischen Ost und West geworden, die in der Berliner Mauer symbolisch ihren Niederschlag gefunden hatte.
Nach Pink Floyds legendärer „The-Wall“-Tour 1980 und 1981 hatte Waters angesichts der wachsenden Differenzen zwischen den Bandmitgliedern 1989 in einem Interview in der Radiosendung „In Studio with Redbeard“ erklärt, dass er „The Wall“ nur dann noch einmal live aufführen würde, „wenn die Berliner Mauer fällt“. Nur vier Monate später war es soweit…
